Monitor buying is confusing because the spec sheet hides what actually matters for daily use. Here's a condensed breakdown.

Resolution:
Refresh rate: 144Hz+ makes a meaningful difference in perceived smoothness for games. For productivity work, 60-75Hz is fine.
Current recommendations I'd point people at:

Panel types and when they matter:
- IPS - best colour accuracy, wide viewing angles, good for content creation and general use. Slight backlight bleed in dark environments.
- VA - best contrast ratio (black levels), good for movies and dark environments. Slower pixel response on some panels (ghosting in fast motion).
- OLED - perfect blacks, best colour, best motion clarity. Burn-in risk for static content (taskbar, HUDs). More expensive. Getting more viable for desktop use with newer panels.
- TN - fastest response times historically but worst colour and angles. Largely irrelevant now that IPS response times have improved.
Resolution:
- 1080p at 27"+ looks soft - fine for gaming, poor for productivity text
- 1440p at 27" is the current sweet spot - sharp, runs well, good monitor selection
- 4K at 27" is excellent for productivity, demands more GPU for gaming
- Ultrawide (21:9) genuinely useful for coding and terminal work, takes adjustment
