Title: DDR5 in 2026 - is it actually worth it over DDR4 now?
Linear Mode
#1
The price gap has closed considerably. When DDR5 launched the premium was absurd - you were paying nearly double for marginal real-world gains outside of memory-bandwidth-limited workloads.

Now the gap is maybe 20-30% depending on kit. So the question has shifted from "obvious no" to "depends on your use case."

Where DDR5 actually helps:
  • CPU-bound gaming on Alder/Raptor Lake and newer - measurable but small (3-8% in most titles)
  • Compilation workloads and anything parallelism-heavy
  • If you are building new anyway - the platform longevity argument is real

Where DDR4 is still fine:
  • GPU-bound gaming (vast majority of people)
  • Existing AM4 or older Intel builds
  • Tight budget builds where that 20% goes to a better GPU instead

My take: if you are buying new today, get DDR5. If you have DDR4 and it is working, do not upgrade just for memory.
