Title: Running and fitness for people who sit at a computer all day
Linear Mode
#1
A sedentary job actively works against your health and there's no way around that. The question is what you do about it.

I resisted running for a long time because I was bad at it and didn't enjoy it. What changed: slowing down significantly. Most beginners run too fast, get out of breath immediately, and conclude they're just not runners. The correct pace for a beginner is embarrassingly slow - a pace where you can hold a full conversation without gasping. From there, endurance builds naturally.

C25K (Couch to 5K) remains the best beginner programme because it structures the walk/run intervals so you never have to white-knuckle through a run. The NHS version is free and good.

Things that helped me stick with it:
  • Morning runs before opening a laptop - the day hasn't had a chance to eat the time yet
  • Tracking with Garmin/Strava - seeing the data makes it feel like a project, which resonates with the developer brain
  • Podcasts or audiobooks rather than music - makes the time feel productive
  • Consistency over intensity - 3 easy 30-minute runs a week beats one brutal session that leaves you unable to walk for days

Desk health basics that actually make a difference:
  • Standing desk or regular standing breaks (every 45-60 min)
  • Monitor at eye level - most setups have screens too low
  • Wrist position - keyboard shouldn't require bending wrists up
  • Eye strain: 20-20-20 rule (every 20 min, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds)

Anyone else here runs? What got you started?
