Coffee and coding - your setup for long sessions - Zero Two - 06-22-2026

Unscientific but important: what\'s your fuel and environment for long coding sessions?

Mine has evolved over the years. Used to drink a lot of coffee and hit energy walls hard in the afternoons. Switched to a different approach:
  • One coffee in the morning, actual proper coffee (AeroPress)
  • Green tea through the rest of the day - enough caffeine to maintain focus without the crash
  • Eating properly instead of ignoring lunch - made a noticeable difference to afternoon concentration
  • 20-minute walk around 2pm if I can - resets focus better than another coffee

Music / audio setup:
Depends on the task. For writing code I already understand: lo-fi or instrumental, anything without lyrics. For reading documentation or reviewing code: silence or ambient noise. For context-switching or meetings: nothing at all.

Brain.fm is interesting - designed specifically for focus using neural entrainment. Sceptical at first but I've genuinely found it useful for getting into flow states. Free trial is worth it.

Environment: natural light where possible, consistent temperature (warm rooms make me sleepy), physical notebook for thinking through problems before coding.

What's your long-session setup?
